Your iPhone or Pixel can record a call and summarize it (no app needed)
Recent iPhones and Google Pixel phones can record a phone call, transcribe it, and give you a short summary with next steps. It's built into the Phone app, free, and most people don't know it's there.
Verdict: Check your phone first

Recent iPhones and Pixel 9 or later (not A-series) can record and transcribe calls for free in supported countries and languages; iPhone summaries need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Check yours before paying for a call-recording app.

Skip this
- Skip a paid call-recording app until you've checked what your phone already does.
- Skip it for video meetings on your computer. A meeting notetaker like Fireflies is the better fit there.
- Skip recording entirely where it isn't allowed or the other person says no.
Why it matters
The quote from the plumber, the insurance claim number, the school nurse’s instructions: phone calls are full of details we forget by the time we hang up. Your phone may already be able to record the call, write it down and summarize it, for free.
On iPhone
- During a call with one other person, look for the record option on the call screen (in supported countries and regions).
- When you hang up, the recording is saved in the Notes app, in the Call Recordings folder.
- Open it to read the transcript (select regions and languages). On an Apple Intelligence iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16 or later), tap Summary for the key points.
- Bonus you may have missed: Apple Intelligence can also summarize voicemails, shown below your voicemail list in the Phone app.
On Google Pixel (Pixel 9 and later)
- Open the Phone app → Settings → Call Notes and turn it on.
- During a call, start Call Notes. The other person is notified.
- After the call, find the summary next to the call in your call log: topics, dates/times mentioned, and next steps.
- Google says recordings, transcripts and summaries stay on your device.
What it’s great at
Service calls, appointments, quotes, customer callbacks: any call where you’d otherwise scribble on the back of an envelope.
Privacy, in plain English
- Tell the other person you're recording. Google says the other participants are notified when Call Notes is turned on; laws in many places require consent.
- Google says Call Notes recordings, transcripts and summaries are stored on your device and not shared with Google.
- On iPhone, recordings and transcripts are saved in the Notes app (Call Recordings folder). Delete ones you don't need.
What can break
- Availability depends on country and language. Apple lists countries where call recording isn't available, including the EU; Pixel Call Notes is limited to certain countries and languages.
- iPhone: recording is for calls with one other person. Summaries need Apple Intelligence on a supported model.
- Pixel: Call Notes needs a Pixel 9 or later (not A-series) and may download extra components the first time.
- Transcripts can mishear names, numbers and addresses. Double-check anything important.
Next step
Pair it with your calendar and reminders: copy the summary into a reminder or email.
